How to Manage Your Inventory in HumanitZ: Weight, Backpacks & What to Keep

Mastering inventory management in HumanitZ is essential to surviving the zombie apocalypse. Knowing what to carry, which backpack to use, and how weight affects your stamina can mean the difference between life and death on every run.
In HumanitZ, your inventory space is limited from the start. Backpacks are equippable items that expand your survivor’s carrying capacity, and equipping one provides extra inventory slots on top of those contributed by your clothing. There are 13 backpacks currently available in the game, ranging from 10 to 40 slots — so upgrading as soon as possible is a top priority.
Weight is just as important as slot count. Carrying too much weight creates a direct penalty to your maximum Stamina, which is already depleted by running, using tools, and performing melee attacks. Keep a close eye on your load — having your inventory packed full of gear will considerably slow you down and leave you vulnerable during zombie encounters.
Your total weight includes everything on your character — not just backpack contents, but also the clothing and armor you are wearing. Heavy items like armored vests add significant weight, so factor that in when planning a loot run. Investing in the Beast of Burden skill is one of the best ways to increase your carry capacity without changing your gear.
Large backpacks are necessary if you want to carry an extra primary weapon or other large-sized items. You are guaranteed to find an Improvised Backpack at the Starter Spawn location when you begin the game, and the starter spawn point also has a high chance of containing a medium-tier backpack like the Travel Pack or School Bag. Always replace your backpack with a bigger one whenever you find one — you will be glad you did.
Backpacks are most commonly found on beds inside houses or sitting on the ground. Most backpacks must be obtained through looting, though a few can be crafted using basic materials. Backpack spawn locations are subject to RNG — the type and presence of a bag at any given location can vary between playthroughs, so always check residential areas thoroughly.
Prioritize what you carry. On a standard loot run, focus on essentials: ammunition, food, water, medical supplies like bandages and painkillers, and crafting materials. Avoid hoarding heavy tools like screwdrivers or wrenches if your slots are limited — drop them at your base or leave them for later. You can drop items on the ground and they will not respawn, making it safe to leave loot in piles sorted by type.
If you die in HumanitZ, you will drop your backpack and whatever weapon or tool you were holding. Items stored in your pockets and quick slots will stay with you on respawn. Always keep your most critical survival items — medicine, food, and a sidearm — in your pocket slots to ensure you never lose them. Managing inventory smartly is what separates survivors from victims in HumanitZ.
