How to Fish in HumanitZ: Step-by-Step Guide to Catching Food and Surviving Off the Land

Fishing in HumanitZ is one of the most reliable ways to keep your hunger in check while avoiding dangerous encounters with zeeks. Whether you’re a solo survivor or playing on a multiplayer server, mastering the fishing mechanic gives you a consistent, renewable food source — and it’s easier than you think once you know the steps.
Before you can cast your first line, you’ll need two essential items: a Fishing Rod and some Bait. Fishing Rods can be found scattered across the world — check houses, sheds, and loot containers. As for Bait, chop down bushes to collect Fiber and Sticks, and this will occasionally yield Bait as a bonus drop, which is also used for setting Animal Traps.
Fishing Rods take damage with every use, so it’s critical to keep yours in good shape. Carry Duct Tape in your inventory and repair your rod before it breaks — especially if it’s the only one you have. A broken rod in the middle of a zombie apocalypse is the last thing you want.
With your rod and bait ready, head to a body of water and locate a fishing spot. Equip your Fishing Rod with bait attached, then cast your line into the designated spot. Now comes the waiting game — patience is key. Watch the tension indicator carefully before you start reeling.
Once your line is cast, wait for the tension circle to jump to the halfway point — that’s your signal. Begin pressing your Reel In key at a steady pace (not too fast). When you see the “Fish Hooked” notification appear at the bottom of the screen, you’re on! Reel in when the fish relaxes, and stop reeling when the line tenses up to avoid snapping it.
If you timed everything correctly, the fish will be automatically added to your inventory. The whole process takes under a minute once you get the feel for it. Cook your catch over a fire to restore hunger and stay fueled for whatever the apocalypse throws at you next.
Want a more passive approach to gathering food? Craft a Fish Trap, load it with Bait, and place it in the water. The trap works on a timer — every few minutes there’s a random chance it produces fish or meat, letting you gather food while you loot, build, or sleep. It’s the perfect complement to active fishing.
Choosing the right profession can make fishing far more effective. The Sunday Fisherman profession significantly increases your chances of catching fish, giving you a major edge when food is scarce. Pair it with smart trap placement and regular fishing sessions, and you’ll never go hungry — no matter how bad things get out there.
