Whether you’re brand new to the franchise or a returning survivor, this beginner’s guide will help you survive your first nights, avoid early-game mistakes, and start building your path to dominance on the island.
Before doing anything else, head into the settings menu and optimize your graphics. Lower shadow quality, disable motion blur and light bloom, and start on lower settings — gradually increasing them as performance allows. A stable frame rate is essential for survival, as lag or crashes at the wrong moment can cost you everything.
When you first load in, you’ll be asked to choose a spawn location. As a beginner, always spawn on the southern beaches — they are far less dangerous, populated mostly by passive herbivores, and rich in early-game resources like thatch, fiber, rock, and flint. Avoid northern zones until you’re well-equipped, as they are significantly more hazardous.
Your very first goal after spawning is to gather resources and craft basic tools. Pick up stones and fiber from the ground, and punch trees to collect wood and thatch. Use these materials to craft a Stone Pickaxe — ideal for gathering thatch and flint — and a Stone Hatchet, which excels at harvesting wood and stone. These two tools dramatically speed up your early resource collection.
Don’t try to build a large base right away — it’s simply not practical with the resources available early on. Instead, build a small thatch shelter that covers your essential needs: a place to sleep, cook, and store items. Place a bed inside as soon as possible, since dying without a respawn point means starting completely from scratch. Once established, upgrade your shelter from thatch to wood as your resources grow.
If you’re completely new to ARK, start in single-player mode. It lets you control the difficulty, adjust taming and leveling speed, and learn core mechanics at your own pace without the pressure of other players. Once you feel comfortable with the basics, you can move on to PvE servers for a more social experience — or PvP servers if you want a serious challenge. Avoid PvP as a beginner, as experienced players can make life very difficult for newcomers.
With so many engrams available, it’s easy to feel overwhelmed. Focus on the essentials first: a Campfire for cooking and warmth, a Storage Box to organize your items, a Bed as your respawn anchor, basic Armor for protection, and a Spear for early combat and hunting. Unlock Bolas early too — they are craftable with thatch, stone, hide, and fiber, and are invaluable for stopping fast predators like Raptors in their tracks.
Prioritize leveling Health and Weight when you gain level-up points. Health increases your survivability in the many fights you’ll encounter, while Weight lets you carry more resources — critical when you’re gathering materials for your base. On official servers, movement speed leveling is disabled by default, so bolas become your best escape tool against fast-moving threats.
Your first tame should be a Parasaur — they are easy to knock out, fast to tame, and function as excellent pack mules for hauling resources. Use a Bola to stop it in place, then knock it unconscious with a Club or Tranq Arrows. Keep it fed with berries and supply narcotics to maintain torpor during the taming process. Always build a quick perimeter around the unconscious dino to protect it while it tames.
Stay hydrated at all times — rivers and ponds are the safest early water sources. Keep an eye on your food bar and eat berries or cooked meat regularly. Be cautious of temperature changes, as ARK’s dynamic weather can cause heatstroke or freezing if you’re not dressed appropriately. At night, stay inside your shelter with a lit campfire to avoid the cold and nocturnal predators.
Death is a normal part of ARK: Survival Ascended. Everything on the island can and will try to kill you at some point. Instead of fearing it, use each death as a learning experience. Accept the learning curve, focus on mastering core mechanics, and you’ll progress much faster. ARK can take dozens or even hundreds of hours to fully master — so take your time, explore carefully, and enjoy the journey.
Once you have a base, a bed, a few tames, and a solid set of tools, you’re ready to push further. Explore new biomes cautiously, unlock more advanced engrams, and work toward taming powerful creatures like the Ankylosaurus for metal gathering or the Pteranodon for aerial scouting.
