How to Defeat Bosses in Order in Terraria: The Complete Boss Progression Guide

Terraria’s boss fights are the backbone of your entire journey — each one gates new content, materials, and game-changing mechanics. Whether you’re a first-timer or returning veteran, following the right boss order is the key to conquering this iconic sandbox world.
PRE-HARDMODE BOSS #1: King Slime — Summon him by using a Slime Crown at the crafting bench or by defeating 150 slimes during a Slime Rain event. He’s considered the easiest first encounter in the game, making him the perfect warm-up. Stay mobile, watch his bounce patterns, and use a Slime Banner if you have one. His drops aren’t essential, but the fight builds your combat confidence.
PRE-HARDMODE BOSS #2: Eye of Cthulhu — This flying horror has a 1-in-3 chance of spawning at night once you have 200 HP, 10 defense, and 3+ NPCs housed. You can also manually summon it with a Suspicious Looking Eye at night. In Phase 1, it circles and sends Servants of Cthulhu after you. Once it drops below 50% health, it transforms into a more aggressive, charge-focused second phase. Use fire arrows in Phase 1, then dodge its charges in Phase 2.
PRE-HARDMODE BOSS #3: Eater of Worlds (Corruption) or Brain of Cthulhu (Crimson) — Which one you fight depends on your world’s evil biome. Summon the Eater of Worlds by breaking three Shadow Orbs or using Worm Food; it’s a massive multi-segment worm that you fight on the surface using penetrating weapons. The Brain of Cthulhu is summoned by breaking three Crimson Hearts or using a Bloody Spine — destroy all its Creeper minions in Phase 1 before you can damage the brain itself in Phase 2.
PRE-HARDMODE BOSS #4: Queen Bee — Found in the Underground Jungle, she spawns when you destroy her Larva inside a Bee Hive, or you can use an Abeemination anywhere in the Jungle biome. She cycles through charging, shooting stingers, and swarming you with bees. Dodge her charges and return fire. Defeating her rewards you with useful bee-themed weapons and accessories that are excellent for the fights ahead.
PRE-HARDMODE BOSS #5: Skeletron — Summoned by speaking to the Old Man NPC at the Dungeon entrance at night and selecting the Curse option. You must defeat him before sunrise or his spinning hands will one-shot you. Focus on destroying the hands first to reduce incoming damage, then unleash everything on the skull head. Beating Skeletron unlocks access to the Dungeon, which contains powerful loot including the Alchemy Table.
OPTIONAL PRE-HARDMODE BOSS: Deerclops — This Don’t Starve Together crossover boss appears in the Snow biome, either randomly at midnight during a Blizzard (if you have 200 HP or 9 defense) or when summoned using a Deer Thing. It combines frost-based attacks with screen-obscuring effects. Stay mobile and avoid its freezing attacks, but don’t stray more than 30 tiles away or it becomes immune to damage. It’s optional but rewards you with excellent loot before Hardmode.
PRE-HARDMODE FINAL BOSS: Wall of Flesh — This is the most important fight of your pre-Hardmode journey. Summon it by throwing a Guide Voodoo Doll into lava in the Underworld while the Guide NPC is alive. It scrolls across the entire screen and speeds up as its health drops, locking you into a horizontal battle you cannot escape. Build the longest platform bridge you can across the Underworld before this fight. Defeating the Wall of Flesh permanently activates Hardmode in your world.
HARDMODE BOSSES — THE MECHANICAL THREE: Once you’ve entered Hardmode and upgraded your gear, your next targets are the three Mechanical Bosses: The Destroyer, The Twins, and Skeletron Prime. Tackle The Destroyer first — a high-altitude bridge strategy makes it manageable even in weaker armor. For The Twins, take out Spazmatism first to eliminate its Cursed Inferno damage. For Skeletron Prime, destroy the Prime Laser and Prime Vice arms before focusing on the head. All three must be defeated to unlock Plantera.
HARDMODE BOSS: Plantera — After defeating all three Mechanical Bosses, Plantera’s Bulbs begin to spawn in the Underground Jungle. Break one to summon her. Phase 1 sees her tethered to a hook chain firing seeds and spores; Phase 2 is far more aggressive. Fight her in a large circular arena in the Jungle for best results. Defeating Plantera drops the Temple Key, unlocking the Jungle Temple — and Golem.
POST-PLANTERA BOSSES: Golem, Lunatic Cultist & Moon Lord — Defeat Golem inside the Jungle Temple using the Lihzahrd Altar and a Lihzahrd Power Cell. After that, defeat the Lunatic Cultist outside the Dungeon to trigger the Lunar Events. Bring down all four Celestial Pillars to finally summon the Moon Lord — the ultimate final boss of Terraria. He has over 145,000 HP and requires you to destroy the eyes on his hands and head before attacking his chest core to win.
PRO TIPS FOR ALL BOSS FIGHTS: Always build a flat arena with campfires, heart lanterns, and sunflowers before any major encounter. Stock up on buff potions — Ironskin, Regeneration, Swiftness, and Lifeforce are your best friends. Each boss can be resummoned using its respective summoning item, so you can grind for drops without limit. Follow the recommended boss order to ensure you’re always properly geared, and remember: preparation wins more fights than skill alone.
