Connecting to your hosted Minecraft server for the first time is easier than you think. Whether you’re playing Java or Bedrock Edition, all you need is your server’s IP address and a few quick steps inside the game. Follow this guide and you’ll be exploring your new world in minutes.
Step 1: Launch Minecraft & Open Multiplayer. Start by launching Minecraft on your computer. From the main menu, click the ‘Multiplayer’ button — this is your gateway to all online servers and hosted worlds. If prompted, acknowledge any online-play warnings and click ‘Proceed’ to continue.
Step 2: Get Your Server IP Address. Before you can connect, you need your server’s IP address. This is provided by your hosting provider and typically looks either like a website address (e.g. play.yourserver.com) or a string of numbers separated by dots (e.g. 192.168.0.1). Check your hosting control panel or welcome email for these details.
Step 3: Add Your Server. In the Multiplayer menu, click ‘Add Server’. You’ll see two fields to fill in — a Server Name (any label you choose to identify it) and the Server Address (your IP address or hostname). Enter your details carefully, then click ‘Done’ to save the server to your list.
Step 4: Join Your Server. Your newly added server will now appear in the Multiplayer server list. Select it and click ‘Join Server’ to connect. Give it a moment to establish the connection — once it does, you’ll be dropped straight into your hosted Minecraft world and ready to play!
Step 5: Connect via Direct Connection (Optional). Prefer to connect without saving the server? Simply click ‘Direct Connect’ in the Multiplayer menu, enter your server’s IP address, and hit ‘Join Server’. If the server is online and the address is correct, you’ll be connected instantly — no need to save anything.
Important: Match Your Game Version. Make sure the version of Minecraft you’re running matches the version your server is using. Most hosted servers run on a specific release, and mismatched versions will prevent you from joining. Check your hosting panel for the server version and switch to it via the Minecraft Launcher if needed.
Troubleshooting Connection Issues. Can’t connect? First, double-check that you’ve entered the correct server IP address and that the server is online. Minecraft Java Edition uses port 25565 by default — ensure this port is not blocked by a firewall. If problems persist, check your hosting provider’s control panel for server status or contact their support team.
