Terraria’s Hardmode is a massive turning point that completely transforms your world. Defeating the Wall of Flesh permanently unlocks this challenging second half of the game — and there’s no going back. This guide walks you through every step, from preparation to boss progression.
Before you can trigger Hardmode, you need to reach the Underworld. The fastest method is to dig a Hellevator — a straight vertical shaft from the surface down to Hell. Once there, hunt a Voodoo Demon, grab its Guide Voodoo Doll, and toss it into lava to summon the Wall of Flesh.
Entering Hardmode is a one-way, permanent decision. Make sure you are fully prepared before taking on the Wall of Flesh. Equip Molten or Jungle Armor, stock up on Healing Potions, and aim to have 300–400 HP. Crafting a Molten Pickaxe in advance will give you a critical head start.
Once you defeat the Wall of Flesh, Hardmode begins immediately. Collect all its drops quickly — including the essential Pwnhammer, a damage-boosting Emblem, and a powerful weapon. In Expert or Master Mode, it also drops a Demon Heart, which permanently grants you an extra accessory slot.
As soon as Hardmode starts, the Corruption or Crimson and the new Hallow biome erupt across your world in a large V-shape, spreading rapidly and infecting nearby blocks. Be prepared to contain this spread using 3-block-wide tunnels or Sunflowers planted near important areas like Pylons.
Your first priority in Hardmode is unlocking the new ores. Use the Pwnhammer to smash Demon or Crimson Altars underground. Each altar destroyed spawns new ore: the first gives Cobalt or Palladium, the second yields Mythril or Orichalcum, and the third produces Adamantite or Titanium.
Mine the new Hardmode ores and follow a strict pickaxe progression. You’ll need a Molten Pickaxe for Cobalt or Palladium, a Cobalt or Palladium Pickaxe for Mythril or Orichalcum, and a Mythril or Orichalcum Pickaxe to reach Adamantite or Titanium. Prioritize crafting a pickaxe, then armor, then weapons.
Use potions generously throughout early Hardmode. Spelunker Potions reveal ore locations through terrain, Mining Potions speed up digging, and Hunter Potions highlight enemies. These buffs make underground exploration dramatically faster and safer when you’re underequipped and outnumbered.
Your main Hardmode goal is to defeat all three Mechanical Bosses: The Destroyer, The Twins, and Skeletron Prime. These bosses can randomly spawn at night once Hardmode begins. Build a dedicated arena with platforms, Campfires, and Heart Lanterns, and always fight them on your own terms using their summoning items.
After defeating all three Mechanical Bosses, the message ‘The jungle grows restless…’ appears. This means Plantera is now available. Find and destroy a Plantera’s Bulb in the Underground Jungle to trigger the fight. Beating Plantera drops the Temple Key, unlocking the Jungle Temple and the Golem boss.
Post-Plantera, the full Hardmode boss chain opens up. Defeat Golem inside the Jungle Temple, then take on the Lunatic Cultist at the Dungeon entrance, clear all four Celestial Pillars, and finally face the Moon Lord — Terraria’s ultimate final boss. Chlorophyte Ore, found in the Underground Jungle, is key gear material for this stage.
Even after defeating the Moon Lord, Hardmode offers endless replayability. Challenge optional bosses like Queen Slime and Duke Fishron, complete the Bestiary, purify your world’s Corruption or Crimson, min-max your gear across multiple character classes, and explore every biome Terraria has to offer.
